Notes

A fistful of misfit magi follow up a rumour about disappearances in a stand of hazel trees. A 2-3 hour adventure that aims to resolve an individual problem of each character, with each having a skill needed by the party. There will be 5 core characters and one auxiliary (but some can be NPCs). This story would be a good start to a campaign.

Characters

Broseley is thought to mean ‘woodland clearing of the fort guardian.’

Genders & names changeable.

Sir Nathaniel of Audlem ex Jerbiton

Has been blind for four years and is partly dependent on his companion, Brynna/Brennan, and his friendship with the Redcap Beryl ex Mercere. Nathaniel has been snubbed and overlooked in the last two social seasons by the other Jerbiton magi, which has caused him to grow cranky. He often complains that he is treated impolitely, not respected or given poor quality items despite his instructions. Although he is now forty-nine, he is not otherwise infirm and dances well. His wife died of gout eight years earlier. Nathaniel is still wealthy and has many connections with the gentry in Cheshire and Shropshire.

Beryl ex Mercere, Redcap

Beryl is one of four Redcaps at Arbour Low Covenant in Derbyshire. She has been a friend of Sir Nathaniel’s for many years. Over the past year she has persisted in speaking up for Nathaniel, and grew impolite in blaming the others for his poor treatment. The other magi of Arbour Low find this tiresome. They have given her fewer important errands, and this spring when resources were assigned for magical defences Beryl was not given any. Since then, on her one trip to Schola Pythagoranis, she was attacked on the road. She feels the covenant unfairly put her at risk. On that same journey, Beryl heard a story about disappearances in a hazel copse in Shropshire in Broseley. According to the maps at Schola Pythagoranis, nothing has been noted about the place.

Gentian ex Merinita (possibly of Voluntas)

Like his/her parens, a True Merinita who believes the House is dominated by faeries. Gentian personally hates them, although Gentian is like sunshine to plants. Gentian carries a curse for avenging a close friend, mistakenly struck down by a Seelie in a fight when Gentian was forced to go along. Gentian ‘will never taste food until touched by a living four-fingered wand.’ Her/his sodales have been no help, but Gentian refuses to return to the Faerie wood. Beryl knew of Gentian’s discontent, and sent a message to join them in exploring a lead for a new beginning.

Laevis (Lightweight) ex Bjornaer of Riverborne Glade

Laevis has a beautiful voice, but has been reprimanded by his sodales for singing in church, drawing attention to himself! Particularly the other three Bjornaer fail to see his interest in the hymns. He has disobeyed rules to stay away from Warrington, so was sent to visit Arbour Low Covenant. Laevis is an Animal and Auram specialist. Good sense of humour, possibly Gentle Gift.

Gabrielle

Imagonem specialist, local to Broseley. She is described as young with long strawberry-red hair, creamy freckled skin and very pretty. A separate party, the other characters know little about her.

Brennan/Brynna

Companion. Red-headed Outlaw. Currently companion to Sir Nathaniel. Was a priest's nephew, made outlaw after wounding the Earl of Chester’s son in a brawl and escaping. Would not let the Earl of Chester’s son buy or take his flute. Always one to stand up to bullies. An excellent street fighter and a good hunter able to converse and read in Latin, Brynna/Brennan also has a sister living in Broseley.
