Loans

Redcaps offer loans at 20% for Vis and Silver or as detailed in the HoH:TL book.

Vis Trading

Redcaps will trade Vis at the following rates:

House Mercere Vis Trade Rates:
PCs give House Mercere provides Example
1 pawn of technique Vis (e.g. Creo) 1 pawn of any form Vis (e.g. Animal) 8 Muto for 8 Corpus
2 pawns of form Vis (e.g. Corpus) 1 pawn of any form Vis (e.g. Ignem) 6 Aquam for 3 Intellego
2 pawns of technique Vis (e.g. Muto) 1 pawn of any technique Vis (e.g. Intellego) 4 Intellego for 2 Creo
4 pawns of form Vis (e.g. Vim) 1 pawn of any technique Vis (e.g. Creo) 4 Vim for 1 Rego

Purchasing Books:

The process: IC to inform the Redcaps that your covenant would like to purchase a book. They must provide:

  • The topic you want
  • Any limits on what you will buy (e.g. "I want a Tractatus of Quality at least 10", "I don't want to pay more than 14 pawns for this Summa, as I wouldn’t be able to afford that."). If the book they find doesn’t fit this criteria they won’t buy it and will return empty handed.
  • A non-refundable broker's fee: (1 for the first book search in a year by a covenant, 2 for the second, 4 for the third and so on. The finder's fee is double this for Summa as they are rarer.)

The Redcaps will go out into the world and make the purchase (essentially on credit) and return with a book in 1 year's time and accept payment on delivery..

All costs below are in Form Vis. Technique vis is worth 150% of Form Vis (rounding down) (So for example if a book + Broker's fee cost 11 Form Vis you could pay with 8 Perdo instead.)

Tractatus

Quality: 2D6+2 (range 4-14, average 9) - Costs:

Value of Books:
Tractatus Quality Form Vis Cost
8 or lower 1 pawn
9 to 11 2 pawns
12 to 14 3 pawns

Art Summa:

To calculate what your Redcap comes back with, calculate the following:

  • [Level + Quality total] = roll 4D6+12 to get the total (Level + Quality).
  • If this total is less than 25 it’s a Vain Summa, if it’s 26-31 it’s a Sound Summa. If it’s 32 of greater it’s an exceptional Summa.

Then calculate the Quality by rolling for the level and subtracting the level from the Level+ Quality calculated above:

  • Level = 3D6+2 for the level (Giving a range between 5 and 20)
  • Quality = [Level + Quality total] - Level (Minimum quality: 6)

Summa cost:

  • Exceptional Summa = Level*2
  • Sound Summa = Level
  • Vain Summa = Level/2

Ability Summa:

As with Art Summa, but divide the final level by 3 (round down).

Using the Dice Roller for book trades:

When doing this please post the roll in the dice roller channel using these formats:

  • Roll to order a Tractatus:
* .2d6+2 "[Covenant name], [Year], Searching for: [Type of book and any restrictions], paying 1 vis brokers fee"
  • Roll to order a Summa:
* .4d6+12 "[Covenant name], [Year], Searching for: [Type of book and any restrictions, Level + Quality roll], paying 2 vis brokers fee"
*  .3d6+2 "Level roll"

Remember that the brokers fee doubles for each extra book in the same year and for Summa. You don't have a choice to refuse a book once ordered, so be careful in setting your limits. If you can't afford it, you automatically get a redcap loan for the balance. The book arrives 4 seasons after it's ordered.

Acquiring Mundane Books

A person can spend a Free Season (That is any season for a magi, or a season in which they are not gaining Exposure exp or performing another specific seasonal activity for a companion) to attempt to hunt for books. This does not cost Vis.

However you need to make a Perception + Area lore roll. 9+ is a success and you can purchase one book. For every 3 points over you can purchase an additional book.

As for magical books, you define the type of book you are seeking. Then roll as above.

  • Roll to order a Tractatus:
* .2d6+2 "[Covenant name], [Year], Searching for: [Type of mundane book and any restrictions], paying Silver
  • Roll to order a Summa:
* .4d6+12 "[Covenant name], [Year], Searching for: [Type of mundane book and any restrictions, Level + Quality roll], paying Silver"
*  .3d6+2 "Level roll"

For Ability Summa, divide the final level by 3 after you roll this.

You then pay

  • Exceptional Summa (Level + Quality is 32+) = Level*2 pounds of silver
  • Sound Summa (Level + Quality is 26-31) = Level pounds of silver
  • Vain Summa (Level + Quality of less than 26) = Level/2 pounds of silver
  • Exceptional Tractatus (Quality 12-14) = 3 pounds of silver
  • Sound Tractatus (Quality 9-11) = 2 pounds of silver
  • Vain Tractatus (Quality 8 or lower) = 1 pound of silver.
