Whitby Abbey location and Geography

The abbey that stands above the covenant on the bank of the Eastern shore of the River Esk.

In Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk stands a lone abbey. The abbey sits on a headland bounced by cliffs to the South East and the River Esk to the North.

These Cliffs hold a number of caves once used by pre-Hermetic cults, smugglers and criminals. But since 1230 these caves have been occupied by a group of Magi from the Order of Hermes.

These Magi, primarily Jerbiton from the Rhine Tribunal discovered a Magical regio within.

The proximity of a very pure Dominion aura in close proximity to a strong Magical aura was considered a useful place for researchers to study the interactions between two conflicting auras.

The cave entrance can be reached by footpaths from the sandy beaches at the mouth of the river and the Regio entrance lies deep within the caves where they also uncovered a Romano-British ritual sites.

People of the Covenant

Magi

  • Amelia ex Jerbiton - A famous illusionist, with a Hermetic reputation for elaborate performances that require a keen mastery of Finesse.
    • Tom (Amelia's Hermetic apprentice)
    • Constantine (Amelia's Peacock Familiar)
  • Gerold ex Miscelania - A local hedge witch who joined House ex MIscelania and was responsible for locating some of the Vis sources in the area.
    • Hugin (Gerold's Raven Familiar)
  • Ruth ex Miscelania - A local Exorcist and Holy Mage who works diligently each year to keep Yorkshire free of hauntings.
  • Phoebe ex Jerbiton - A promising Researcher who might have been more suited to house Bonisagus. Currently working on developing a new spell duration with the aim of eventually discovering a way to mitigate the effects of diving auras.
    • Aristotle - A Hoopoe bird, Familiar of Phoebe
  • Iulia ex Jerbiton - A Mentem specialist who left the Rhine rapidly
    • Mistress - The Tortoise shell cat Familiar of Iulia.
  • Laurea ex Bonisagus - A Bonisagus, former apprentice of Milo of Herewards Isle, a man know for his piety and his limp.

Companions

  • Ralph of York - The Abbot who owns the Abbey above. Not truly a companion, but somebody who often spends time with the Magi.
  • Piers de Leveington - A retired crusader seeking rest after the bloody horrors of the Crusades. Guarding the Abbey and the Covenant seem a noble calling for him.
  • Berchard the Cantor - A Choir-master of the Abbey who enjoys magic and adventure more than is proper for a monk.
  • Rothiger the Hunter - A young hunter who winters with the covenant and travels through the temperate years.

The Arrangement

The Vis poor mainland covenant of Oculus Septentrionalis in Lubeck, Germany, established this daughter covenant in the Stonehenge Tribunal. They have agreed to supply the covenant with its material needs (100 pounds of silver) in exchange for 10 Vis per year. This leaves them rather Vis poor and they did not arrive with a particularly good library. So as much as they may deny it, the covenant is struggling.
